Economic Benefits of Film Production in Maryland

The Maryland Film Production Activity Tax Credit has been a tremendous success. The legislation secured the first season of the Paramount + series Special Ops: Lioness, the limited series Lady in the Lake for Apple TV, the limited series We Own This City for HBO, the groundbreaking Netflix series House of Cards, the first four seasons of the award-winning HBO series Veep, as well as many independent films, generating an economic impact in the State of more than $1.3 billion.

During its six seasons, House of Cards hired an average of more than 2,000 Maryland residents per season, purchased or rented goods or services from more than 2,000 Maryland businesses per season and had an economic impact of nearly $120 million per season.

During its four seasons, Veep hired an average of 1,000 Maryland residents per season, purchased or rented goods or services from more than 1,000 Maryland businesses per season and had an economic impact of over $40 million per season.

2023 legislation created the Maryland Entertainment Council to study and make recommendations regarding Maryland’s film, television, and entertainment industry. Members of the Council were appointed by Governor Wes Moore.
